Botanical data

Names with a source.

Botanisia stores accepted scientific names, synonyms, families, genera and common names in a versioned taxonomy. Listings point at a taxon record instead of hiding names in free text, so a correction can be made once and inherited everywhere.

Source

The initial dataset comes from the GBIF Backbone Taxonomy, retrieved 24 October 2026, with common names from GBIF vernacular names. Photographs are licensed separately and credited on each listing.

Completeness

This is an incomplete initial subset: — families and the commonly traded species listed in the demo catalogue. It is not a complete checklist of European or world flora. The import pipeline supports a full reviewed dataset; the interface marks the current version as incomplete.

Corrections

Administrators can add, merge, rename and retire names without breaking existing listings. A merged name redirects old listings to the accepted record; retired names remain readable. Reported misidentifications enter the moderation queue.

Families in the current catalogue

Counts include listings currently published by Botanisia sellers.

How a name is handled

A species record stores the accepted scientific name, the canonical name, the genus and family, synonyms, common names, the source and the import version. Cultivars and hybrids can be recorded as their own names; uncertain identifications can be marked as such instead of forcing a seller to assert a species.

Search tolerates common-name variations and misspellings using trigram similarity. Searching a genus returns all matching accepted names, and a common name is shown alongside the scientific name — never instead of it.

If you spot a wrong name, contact moderation with the listing link and the source you are relying on. Botanisia records the correction, the reviewer and the date rather than silently overwriting the record.
